Delhi EWS/DG/CWSN Admission 2026-27: The Parent Master Guide

Prepare flawlessly before the DoE forms release. Master the age criteria, exact document checklists, and the computerized lottery rules to secure your child's 25% RTE reserved seat.

Every year, thousands of Delhi parents compete for 25% reserved seats under the EWS (Economically Weaker Section), DG (Disadvantaged Group), and CWSN (Children With Special Needs) categories in private unaided schools for Nursery, KG, and Class 1.

These seats are a constitutional right under the RTE Act 2009. Because the Directorate of Education (DoE) conducts the process centrally, schools cannot reject your child if you meet the criteria. But a single wrong date of birth or missing certificate will automatically disqualify your application.

Organizing documents early is the single biggest advantage a parent can have.

1 Strict Age Criteria: The #1 Rejection Trap

Age eligibility is calculated strictly as on March 31 of the admission year (2026). DoE software automatically blocks applications if a child is overage or underage by even a single day.

Class Level Required Age (as of Mar 31, 2026) Valid Date of Birth Range
Nursery 3 to under 4 years Apr 1, 2022 – Mar 31, 2023
KG (Pre-Primary) 4 to under 5 years Apr 1, 2021 – Mar 31, 2022
Class 1 5 to under 6 years Apr 1, 2020 – Mar 31, 2021

*Note for CWSN Category: Children with special needs generally receive age relaxations (upper age limit extended by 1-2 years). Exact dates will be in the final DoE notification.

2 Category Eligibility: Where Do You Belong?

You must apply under one specific category. Selecting the wrong category will result in document mismatch during school verification.

EWS Category

Economically Weaker Section for families with an annual income below ₹5,00,000.

Needs: Valid Income Certificate issued by SDM/Tehsildar.

DG Category

Disadvantaged Groups including SC, ST, OBC (NCL), Orphans, and Transgender children.

Needs: Valid Caste/Category Certificate. (No income proof needed).

CWSN Category

Children With Special Needs having a minimum 40% certified disability.

Needs: Govt. Disability Certificate (UDID). No income proof needed.

3 The Big "Upload" Trap

Critical Application Rule

During the online application process, you do NOT upload any PDF or image files. You manually type out your document numbers and details. Verification happens physically at the school after you win the lottery.

Mistake

Typing "Kumar" instead of "Kumari" because you think you can just show the correct certificate later to fix it.

Reality

Schools will strictly cancel the admission if the online form spelling/DOB does not perfectly match the physical document.

4 The Master Document Checklist

Gather these original documents right now. Getting a new income or caste certificate can take 2-4 weeks in Delhi.

Basic Documents (Everyone)

  • Child's Original Birth Certificate
  • Valid Delhi Residence Proof (Ration Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar, recent utility bill, or registered rent agreement)
  • Parents' Aadhaar Cards
  • 6 Passport-size photos (Child + Parents)

Category Specific

  • EWS: Income Certificate (Current year validity)
  • DG: SC/ST/OBC (NCL) Certificate, or Orphan/Transgender certificate
  • CWSN: Medical Board Disability Certificate (UDID)

Keep 2 sets of photocopies self-attested and ready in a folder.

5 How the Draw of Lots Works

Schools have zero say in who gets selected. There are no interviews, no donations, and no "recommendation quotas" for EWS/DG seats.

1. Form Submission

Parents submit the online form on the DoE portal, selecting their preferred schools based on distance (0-1km, 1-3km, 3-6km, 6km+).

2. Computerized Lottery

DoE runs a centralized, video-graphed random software lottery. Distance from the school is given priority in the algorithm.

3. Direct Allotment

If selected, an SMS is sent to the parent, and a formal allotment letter is generated online containing the school's name.

6 Do This Before Notifications Release

Calculate Exact Age

Check the birth certificate today to ensure the child falls exactly within the March 31, 2026 cut-off limits.

Apply for Certificates

Don't wait. If your income certificate is expiring, apply for renewal immediately at the SDM office.

Verify Address Proof

Your Aadhaar or Voter ID must show a Delhi address. If you've shifted recently, update it now.

Secure Your Mobile No.

Use a permanent mobile number for registration. All OTPs, lottery results, and alerts will come to this number.

7 The Post-Result Emergency Window

Winning the lottery is only half the battle. Once the allotment list is published:
